Schedules of the Indian Constitution
Schedule Purpose Remarks
1st Lists the States and Union Territories of India. Defines the territorial extent and names of States and UTs.
2nd Deals with the salaries of public officials, including the President, Judges, etc. Provides financial security to high-ranking officials.
3rd Contains the forms of oaths and affirmations for elected officials. Ensures commitment to uphold the Constitution.
4th Allocates seats in the Rajya Sabha (Council of States) to various states and union territories. Ensures proportional representation of states in the Rajya Sabha.
5th Provides special provisions for the administration and control of Scheduled Areas and Scheduled Tribes. Protects the rights and culture of Scheduled Tribes.
6th Relates to the administration of tribal areas in the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram. Grants autonomy to tribal regions in specific states.
7th Divides powers between the Union and State governments through three lists: Union List, State List, and Concurrent List. Establishes a federal structure of governance.
8th Lists the official languages recognized by the Constitution. Currently includes 22 languages.
9th Contains laws that are exempt from judicial review. Aimed at protecting land reform and other social welfare laws from legal challenges.
10th Relates to the "Anti-Defection Law," disqualifying members on grounds of defection. Prevents political instability caused by elected members switching parties.
11th Lists the powers, authority, and responsibilities of Panchayats (rural local governments). Strengthens local self-government in rural areas.
12th Lists the powers, authority, and responsibilities of Municipalities (urban local governments). Enhances governance and development in urban areas.
