National Science Day 2026

National Science Day is one of the most important scientific celebrations in India. Every year on February 28, schools and colleges across the country celebrate this day to honour the discovery of the famous Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman.

๐Ÿงช Why Do We Celebrate National Science Day?

National Science Day is celebrated to remember the historic discovery of the Raman Effect in 1928.  This discovery changed the world of physics and helped scientists understand how light scatters when it passes through different materials.

This research was conducted in Kolkata, and it became so important that Sir C.V. Raman received the Nobel Prize in Physics for it in 1930.

๐ŸŽฏ Theme of National Science Day 2026

“Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat”

This theme was announced by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

๐Ÿ” What does this theme mean?

  • It highlights the huge role women scientists play in building a developed (Viksit) India.

  • It encourages more girls and young women to take part in STEM fields — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

  • It supports gender equality and welcomes more women into research, innovation, and scientific leadership.

๐Ÿงฌ What is the Raman Effect ?

The Raman Effect is a scientific phenomenon that explains how light changes its direction and colour slightly when it hits different materials.

Example:
When sunlight passes through water, glass, or tiny particles, it scatters. This scattering helps scientists study the properties of those materials.

Sir C.V. Raman’s discovery opened new paths in physics, chemistry, and modern technology.

๐Ÿซ How Do Schools and Colleges Celebrate?

Across India, institutions celebrate National Science Day with:

  • Science fairs

  • Exhibitions

  • Model presentations

  • Quiz competitions

  • Lectures by scientists

  • Innovation challenges

  • Workshops for young researchers

These activities inspire students to explore science creatively.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ”ฌ Role of Women in Science

The 2026 theme strongly focuses on women scientists. Today, women in India contribute to:

  • Space research

  • Artificial intelligence

  • Medicine

  • Environmental science

  • Physics experiments

  • Chemical research

Government programs like KIRAN, WISE Fellowship, and Vigyan Jyoti help support and encourage women in scientific careers.

๐Ÿ“˜ Why Is National Science Day Important for Students?

  • Helps students understand the value of science in daily life.

  • Encourages interest in research and experiments.

  • Inspires students to think logically, solve problems, and innovate.

  • Builds scientific curiosity among young learners.

  • Motivates girls to join science and technology fields confidently.
