2.  1953: Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay become the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

            On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. The two men were part of a British expedition led by John Hunt. They reached the summit at 11:30 a.m. local time.
